The Rt Hon Liam Booth-Smith

Biography

Lord Booth-Smith is a British political adviser and member of the House of Lords, with experience at the centre of UK government and at the frontier of emerging technology policy. He served as Downing Street Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak from October 2022 to July 2024, after previously advising Sunak at HM Treasury and working in No.10 during Boris Johnson’s premiership.

Across these roles, Liam focused on the practical mechanics of governing: setting priorities, aligning ministers and departments behind a limited number of outcomes, and driving execution through a complex Whitehall system. His work has been closely connected to the politics of reform, the delivery of economic strategy, and the institutional questions that shape state capacity.

Created a life peer in 2024, Liam now sits in the House of Lords. He currently works in the AI sector as Head of External Affairs at Anthropic, where he engages with policy and external stakeholders on the governance of advanced AI systems.
