Digital technologies, political representation and influence

This research explores how social media is reshaping political communication, lobbying and representation, and changing the relationship between political organisations, citizens and policymakers.

Social media has become an increasingly important arena for political communication, representation, and influence. This research examines how political parties and interest groups use digital platforms to represent constituencies and interests and to shape political debate and policymaking. It also asks whether social media primarily reproduce established patterns of lobbying and political communication in a new venue, or whether the distinctive features of digital platforms generate new forms of political engagement and influence. More broadly, the research explores how the shift of political activity to digital platforms is changing the relationships between political organisations, citizens, and policymakers.

This is collaborative research conducted with an external team through the ADVODID project.
