Funding your studies

The Postgraduate Admissions website provides full details on course fees and living costs, and their finance overview tool will help you calculate your costs. They also provide information on funding opportunities on offer at the University of Cambridge and have a funding search tool which applicants can use to identify possibly funding opportunities. A range of funding opportunities is available to support your postgraduate studies at Cambridge. In 2024-2025 about 64% of the University’s doctoral students were fully funded. Even though the competition for fully funded studentships is very intense, we encourage applicants to indicate on their application form that they would like to be considered for these centrally managed competitions.

Please note that there are firm deadlines for applying for funding opportunities. Any application received after the stated funding deadline will not be eligible for consideration for an award.

When to look for funding

The University advises all applicants to look for funding opportunities at least a year before they apply / start their course. Having evidence that you have secured funding secured for the duration of your studies is an admissions requirement. If you do not have funding in place before you start your course, you will not meet the conditions of your admission and your offer of a place on the course will be withdrawn (this usually happens by the end of July).

Applicants are able to accept conditional offers of admittance prior to obtaining funding.

Funding application process and timeline

The University holds two main funding rounds for all graduate applicants for admittance in the following academic year. Completed applications must be submitted by the relevant funding deadlines to be considered.

The funding bodies are separate to the Department and we do not have any further influence on a funding outcome once an applicant is put forward to these bodies for consideration. Your eligibility will be determined by your own circumstances and by the terms under which each body awards their scholarships.

Decisions will be announced from the end of March through to the end of June.
